Understanding McCreary County Releases
A release record marks the end of one agency's custody event. It is not the same as an arrest entry, a current roster result, a projected date, or a final court judgment. That distinction is vital in McCreary County because the arresting county and the physical jail can differ. The McCreary County Sheriff may hold the arrest and transport records. An out-of-county receiving jail may hold the booking sheet and gate-out entry. The court supplies the legal order, while the Kentucky Department of Corrections, or KDOC, documents a state transfer, parole release, or discharge.
Common dispositions include bond, release on conditions, time served, dismissal, probation, transfer to KDOC, transfer to another jail, or delivery to federal or immigration custody. A transfer ends one custody segment, but it does not mean the person returned to the community. For that reason, the exact recorded wording matters.
| Release type | What it means | Where to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Bond or court order | The jail may discharge the person after required processing. | Receiving-jail release log and McCreary court file |
| Time served or dismissal | Custody may end after the sentence or court action is complete. | Jail release entry and final disposition |
| Parole or reentry supervision | Prison custody ends while KDOC control continues in the community. | KOOL, Daily Releases, and District 20 |
| Transfer | One jail closes its custody event and another authority takes over. | The named destination agency |
McCreary County Release Record Fields
The strongest routine proof of release from a county receiving jail is its own release entry. A useful request ties the record to the booking and asks for fields that already exist. The record may identify the person, admission, release event, authority, and disposition. A booking sheet can also show the arresting agency, charges as booked, bond, photograph, property inventory, and holds. Those booked charges are not always the final legal result, so the court docket should be read with the jail record.
| Field | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Name, aliases, and booking number | Connects the release entry to the correct custody event. |
| Admission date and time | Shows when that jail's custody began. |
| Release date and time | Shows when that jail recorded the end of custody. |
| Releasing facility and authority | Identifies the custodian and the source of authority. |
| Release disposition | Distinguishes community release, bond, time served, or transfer. |
| Destination or transfer agency | Shows where the person went next when that public field is kept. |
Note: Website visibility and record retention are different; removal from a portal does not show that the underlying record was destroyed.
Request McCreary County Release Records
First identify the actual custodian. Call County Jailer Jessie Hatfield through McCreary County government at 606-376-2413 and ask which jail held the person on the date in question. The receiving jail normally keeps its booking sheet, release authorization, log, and photograph. Sheriff David Sampson's office at 36 Court Street in Whitley City may keep arrest and transport records. Fiscal Court processes records held by county government, and the Circuit Court Clerk maintains case records and judicial orders.
- Gather the full name, aliases, date of birth, approximate booking date, arresting agency, and case number.
- Ask the County Jailer to identify the receiving facility for that date. Do not assume the current contract governed an older arrest.
- Request existing fields from the receiving jail, including admission and release times, disposition, authority, and transfer destination if maintained.
- Ask for electronic copies and advance notice of any fee. McCreary County notes that a nominal copying fee may apply but publishes no fixed release-record price.
- If material is withheld, ask for the written statutory basis. Send a separate request to any destination agency named in a transfer record.
Kentucky's Open Records Act, KRS 61.870 through 61.884, governs access to nonexempt existing agency records. KRS 61.880(1) generally calls for a written response within five business days. That response may allow inspection, explain a denial, or address production timing. KRS 61.874(3) permits a reasonable noncommercial copy fee up to actual reproduction cost, excluding staff cost. Privacy, law-enforcement, juvenile, sealed, or expunged material may be withheld or redacted under applicable law.
Search McCreary County Released Inmates
Start with the custody class. A McCreary arrest calls for the receiving-jail path. A Kentucky felony sentence calls for KDOC systems. A person at USP McCreary belongs in the federal track. The order prevents a common error: treating the absence of a name from a live roster as proof of release.
- For a county case, ask the County Jailer which jail booked the person, then check that jail's current roster only to test present custody.
- Search the exact person in Kentucky VINELink and confirm the reporting agency and event label. A custody change may be a transfer.
- Obtain the receiving jail's release entry. This is the direct record of physical release from that jail.
- Check both McCreary court levels for the bond order, disposition, judgment, sentence, or later order that explains the authority.
- For a state offender, use KOOL and the date-indexed KDOC Daily Releases archive. For federal custody, use BOP and the federal docket.
- Follow any recorded transfer to KDOC, another jail, BOP, USMS, or ICE before describing the outcome.
No McCreary Release List Online
The official McCreary County Sheriff website publishes no current inmate roster, inmate search, booking log, release-date filter, booking-photo gallery, or recent-release feed. It offers neither a 24-hour nor a 72-hour view. As a result, there are no county-published feed fields, update schedule, display period, or retention window to interpret. A similarly named commercial page is not an official substitute, and a current receiving-jail roster should not be relabeled as a list of released people.
For a same-day question, call the receiving jail identified by the County Jailer and ask for confirmation or its release log. For a wider period, give the custodian an exact start and end time instead of asking for a list the office may not maintain. Kentucky VINELink can report an event for one selected person, while KDOC Daily Releases covers state offenders. Neither source produces a full McCreary County bond-out list.
The sheriff site links to an official Facebook presence, but no evidence shows a complete or timely ledger there. Social posts can offer incident-level context only. No official McCreary sheriff mobile app was identified, so an app-based release stream should not be assumed or invented.
KDOC Search for McCreary Releases
Kentucky Offender Online Lookup, known as KOOL, covers KDOC institutions, state offenders housed in county facilities, and people under state community supervision. Begin broadly with a last name and first initial. Then narrow with a full first name or PID/DOC number. Open the detail record and verify the identity before relying on status, location, sentence dates, or parole fields. KOOL is not a complete archive of short McCreary County jail stays that ended in bond, dismissal, or time served.
| KOOL field | How to read it |
|---|---|
| Current status and location | Shows the state system's present classification or supervising location. |
| PID/DOC number | Helps distinguish people with similar names. |
| Projected Release Date From/To | An advanced search range, not proof of actual release. |
| Good Time Release Date | A sentence calculation that can change with credits and legal events. |
| Parole table | May show hearing action, next eligibility, or a proposed date. |
| Conviction and photo fields | Provide identity context, subject to scope and display limits. |
KDOC says KOOL updates four times daily, does not guarantee accuracy, and may show data less than 120 days old before it is finalized. It also displays only the last ten convictions. When a former record is missing, request it from Offender Information Services, P.O. Box 2400, Frankfort, Kentucky 40602-2400.
McCreary State Release Archive Search
The KDOC Daily Releases archive is a second, released-first state channel. Date-organized reports can show a DOC number, name, release type, released-from institution, and highest felony class. Historical reports even preserve state-offender entries from McCreary County Jail before it closed.
A Daily Releases match gives useful state context, but it does not cover every county release. An institution named in a state report may be a county jail holding a state prisoner. Compare the report with the KOOL detail and the underlying KDOC record before drawing a conclusion about supervision or final discharge.
Why McCreary Release Search Moves
The closed McCreary County Jail shapes the whole local search. KDOC documented closure assistance in 2013, while county records list a 2012 closure notice and a 2013 inmate-transport order. McCreary still has an elected County Jailer, but there is no operating local jail with a permanent McCreary-branded roster.
A January 2026 public-notice report said McCreary prisoners were then housed in Knox County and described a planned move to an expanded Whitley County Detention Center. That dated account does not prove which jail holds a person now or whether the planned move occurred. The County Jailer must confirm the contract and custodian for the date at issue. Hard-coding one neighboring county as the McCreary jail risks sending a records request to the wrong office.
Note: The holding jail's official portal and custodian should be confirmed again whenever the county's placement arrangement changes.
Two McCreary Release Court Checks
McCreary County belongs to Kentucky's 34th Judicial Circuit and District. District Court handles misdemeanors, violations, and early felony proceedings. Circuit Court handles felony prosecutions. One felony matter can therefore appear at both levels, and a District Court result may stop before the later Circuit Court disposition. Search CourtNet within the available access level or contact Circuit Court Clerk Othel King at 606-376-5041.
The docket may show bond, release conditions, dismissal, judgment, sentence, probation, modification, or revocation. It explains the legal basis for custody ending. It may not show the exact time the receiving jail completed release processing, so pair the order with the jail's gate-out entry. The official McCreary court page also warns that older files may be offsite or destroyed under retention schedules; the clerk can give storage and locator details when they exist.
Expunged McCreary Release Records
Kentucky divides expungement among distinct legal routes. KRS 431.073 addresses specified Class D felonies, KRS 431.076 addresses acquittals and dismissals, and KRS 431.078 addresses qualifying misdemeanors, violations, and related matters. Eligibility, waiting periods, costs, and exclusions depend on the current statute and case facts, so the Kentucky Courts expungement instructions should control.
An expungement or sealing order can change what the public may see. It does not establish the physical time someone left a receiving jail. An empty search result is therefore not proof that no arrest, custody, or release occurred. Juvenile, sealed, and expunged records can be unavailable even when an agency once maintained a release entry.
McCreary Release Support and Supervision
Release from prison can begin a period of state control in the community. Parole is conditional release from a custodial sentence. Probation comes from a court order in place of or after custody. Mandatory reentry supervision under KRS 439.3406 is treated as parole, so release from incarceration does not always mean the sentence has been discharged.
- Parole
- Conditional community release governed by the Kentucky Parole Board and KDOC.
- Probation
- Court-ordered supervision that may follow or replace a custody term.
- Discharge
- The end of the agency's sentence or supervision control, as shown by its record.
- Detainer
- A request or legal basis for another authority to take custody.
McCreary County is served by KDOC Probation and Parole District 20, with a Williamsburg satellite for the McCreary and Whitley area. Its 2025 resource manual names Reentry Coordinator Carey McKinney at 105 Surrey Hill Road in Monticello, 606-278-6073, and lists Adanta at 90 Medical Lane in Whitley City, 606-376-2466. These are practical support contacts, not proof of release. KOOL and District 20 records remain the status check.
McCreary Release or Agency Transfer
An ICE or U.S. Marshals Service transfer can make a person disappear from a receiving-jail roster without returning the person to the community. USMS uses state, local, and private detention space. A person held for a federal case may leave one contracted jail for another, while the federal docket continues to show detention authority. USMS has no BOP-style historical public release locator, so the federal case and a USMS records request are the fallback.
ICE's Online Detainee Locator System focuses on current immigration detention, not a full release archive. A no-result does not prove release or removal. When a jail record says “released to” another authority, follow that destination's locator and record before describing the larger outcome. The county release entry is still valid proof that the county segment ended, but it does not prove freedom from all custody.
USP McCreary Federal Release Search
USP McCreary is a federal correctional complex in Pine Knot, not the county jail. A federal prisoner can be housed within McCreary County without a county arrest, county booking, or sheriff release record. Search the BOP Inmate Locator by register number or identity and read the release date with the location or status. “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” establishes the end of BOP custody as displayed, but another agency may still hold the person.
A move from USP McCreary to another BOP institution is a transfer. PACER can provide the federal judgment, detention or release orders, and supervised-release term. The U.S. Parole Commission's 2026 calendar lists two USP McCreary hearing dates, but that fact applies only to the limited population still under federal parole law, not most modern federal sentences. County and federal results must stay separate.
Where McCreary Release Records Appear
The right system depends on who held the person and what event needs proof. A live roster addresses current custody. A release log records the end of a jail segment. State and federal locators apply only within their own scope.
| Situation | Best source | What it proves |
|---|---|---|
| Still held on a McCreary case | County Jailer, then receiving-jail roster | Listed present custody, subject to portal lag |
| Released from a receiving jail | That jail's release entry | End of that jail's custody event |
| Kentucky state release | KOOL and KDOC Daily Releases | State status, date fields, release type, or supervision |
| Federal release | BOP locator and federal docket | End of BOP custody and federal legal context |
| Release authority | District and Circuit Court files | Bond, disposition, sentence, or later order |
McCreary County Release Facilities
Two facility tracks matter in McCreary County. The former McCreary County Jail represents the county function, but physical custody occurs at a receiving jail identified by the County Jailer. USP McCreary is an operating federal complex whose records belong to BOP and the federal courts.
- McCreary County Jail: closed local facility; confirm the current receiving jail, then obtain its release entry.
- USP McCreary: use the BOP locator and federal docket; leaving the institution can mean transfer, release, or handoff.
