Releases from McCreary County Jail
McCreary County has a jail function but no operating county jail building. The Kentucky Department of Corrections documented assistance with the closure in 2013. County records also list a December 2012 jail closure notice and a June 2013 inmate-transport order. Those records explain why an official McCreary roster, release list, and booking-photo stream are not available today.
A person arrested on a McCreary case may be booked at a contracted jail outside the county. That receiving jail normally creates the admission record, booking sheet, photograph, release log, and release authorization. Kentucky's Open Records Act, KRS 61.870 through 61.884, applies to nonexempt existing agency records. Under KRS 61.880(1), the agency generally gives a written response within five business days. That deadline is for the response, not a promise that all records arrive on the fifth day. KRS 61.874(3) permits a reasonable noncommercial reproduction charge that excludes staff cost. Why the McCreary Jail Roster Is Elsewhere
A January 28, 2026 local public-notice edition said McCreary inmates were then housed in Knox County and described plans for an expanded Whitley County Detention Center. That report is useful because it dates the arrangement. It is not proof that Knox still holds every McCreary detainee or that the proposed Whitley move occurred.
The correct receiving jail is a fact to verify for each custody date. Old directory listings can outlive a contract and may still describe McCreary County Jail as an operating building. The official closure record and a current call to the County Jailer deserve more weight than an undated directory.

Transfers from McCreary County Custody
A roster disappearance can mean a transfer. KDOC receives sentenced state prisoners and maintains KOOL. USMS can place federal prisoners in local contract space. ICE has a locator for current immigration detention, but it is not a historical release archive. A receiving jail may accurately record “released to” an agency even though the person remains confined.
Follow the named destination. A KDOC transfer calls for KOOL and state records. A federal writ or marshal transfer calls for the federal docket and, when needed, USMS FOIA. An immigration transfer calls for ICE's Online Detainee Locator System and field-office guidance. A no-result by itself is not proof of freedom.
What the Closed McCreary Jail Changes
The closure is not just facility history. It determines which agency can answer each question. The jailer identifies the physical custodian. The receiving jail records processing. The court supplies legal authority. VINE can report an event from a participating agency. State and federal locators cover their own systems.
No official source established local release hours, an exit door, property pickup procedures, family waiting areas, transportation, weekend processing, a bond schedule, or a county good-time policy. Those details belong to the current receiving jail. They should be confirmed there rather than filled with general jail practices.
Documenting McCreary County Custody
A careful record check preserves dates. Arrest, booking, court-order, physical release, and destination-agency intake times may differ. Recording each timestamp with its source helps show whether entries describe a continuous transfer or a real break in custody. If an agency provides only a date, do not borrow an hour from another record. When names or dates conflict, use the booking number and court case number to ask each custodian to identify the event.
Keep the receiving jail's entry separate from the court's legal authority and any later state or federal intake. That separation also matters for old McCreary records. A historical KDOC Daily Releases entry may show a state-corrections event connected with the former jail, but it is not a current county bond-out list. Label the source, its date, and the system it represents.
For formal confirmation, preserve the written response as well as the record produced. A denial or redaction should identify its statutory ground. It does not automatically prove that no booking or release record exists. Kentucky law allows agencies to protect exempt material while providing a reasonably separable public portion. The originating office, not a copied roster or social post, is the proper place to resolve a discrepancy.
VINE can add a useful event notice when the receiving agency participates, but it does not replace the release authorization or jail log. Match the agency name on the notice to the custodian identified by the County Jailer. If the names differ, ask whether the person moved between facilities. This extra check is important in McCreary because the arresting county and the physical booking site may not share a name. It also keeps a delayed notification from overriding a dated agency record.
